Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief is a fiercely intelligent, morally ambiguous dimension hopping trickster, so who better to run his upcoming TV series than a Rick and Morty alumnus?
Loki‘s destined to be a jewel in the crown of Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney Plus, boasting one of the most popular (and let’s face it, lusted after) characters in the MCU and the star wattage of Hiddleston. Its premiere is a way off yet, but The Hollywood Reporter is, uh, reporting that Michael Waldon will be writing the pilot, acting as showrunner and executive producer.
This can only be a good thing for the project, which is reportedly about Loki traveling through Earth’s history as “an unlikely influencer on human events.” It’s a premise that should enable the show to neatly sidestep the awkward fact that the character died in the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War (and not in a ‘definitely going to be resurrected in Endgame‘ sort of way).
Waldron comes with an impressive CV under his belt, too. He worked on some awesome episodes of Rick and Morty – “Ricksy Business,” “Something Ricked This Way Comes,” “Rixty Minutes” and (one of my all-time favorites) “Raising Gazorpazorp.” He also boasts numerous credits on Community and his spec script The Worst Guy Of All Time (And The Girl Who Came To Kill Him) recently landed him the top spot on the famous Black List of un-produced screenplays.
Right now, we have no idea when Loki will hit the service, but given that they’re assembling a creative team already, we may see shooting beginning in the second half of this year targeting a late 2020 release. With this, The Vision and Scarlet Witch, The Falcon and Winter Soldier and Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, it’s clear that Disney’s hoping that their entry to the streaming market quickly carves out a subscriber base, and it’s looking very likely that it will.
