After the conflict with the Whisperers finally kicked off last week, tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead properly explored their leader Alpha, even explaining her tragic backstory that led to her being so unhinged in the present. Knowing her past doesn’t make her any less of a formidable threat, though, and the next episode of the post-apocalyptic drama promises that things will only heat up from now on.
Season 9 episode 11’s titled “Bounty” and looks to be all about Alpha’s attempts to “rescue” her daughter Lydia from the Hilltop – whatever the cost. The synopsis for the installment also teases that there’ll be trouble for the folks of the Kingdom.
Here’s how it reads:
“The savage group led by Alpha confronts the Hilltop in a harrowing attempt to retrieve her daughter; a supply run for the Kingdom turns into a dangerous quest.”
In the comics, Alpha’s thirst for revenge after the survivors take Lydia hostage is the beginning of the all-out war between the creepy cult and the assembled communities, and it sounds like the show’s about to reach this stage in next week’s episode. The most devastating outcome of Alpha’s retaliation is the deaths of a bunch of characters, both new and old, and though we’re not sure if we should expect this or not on the screen, the use of the word “harrowing” in the synopsis does have us worried.
That said, showrunner Angela Kang’s promised that there’ll be “surprises” in store in this adaptation of the Whisperer war storyline. For instance, Alpha’s backstory was pretty much invented for TV. With a recent rumor pointing to a certain Kingdom resident leaving the show soon, though, we suspect there might be some bloodshed around the corner.
Be sure to catch The Walking Dead 9×11 “Bounty” next Sunday, February 24th on AMC.
